Little Red Reading Hood!

Lucy Rowland's (very meta) re-imagining of the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood is one not to be missed.

Oh, would you just look at this front cover? That gorgeous silver title font!!!!! Put it on my gravestone!!!!!

Rowland has done a fantastic job bringing a slightly ridiculous childhood classic to the hands of children today (and for the rest of forever, unless we become robot-hybrids). Often we take for granted the endings of stories we know and love, but that does not mean that we must always take them as gospel. I was pleasantly surprised with how simple yet sincere the ending is to this beautiful picture book. I implore you to read this to your little ones... and your big ones... your ones of all sizes, as it were.
The pure magic that books can ignite is captured perfectly in gold, yellow and orange flecks by illustrator Ben Mantle. This is sharply contrasted by the dark blue of the first and last pages, but softly blends with the purple of the library. Mantle encapsulates the vibrancy of reading and what it can do to over-familiar and monotonous surroundings. That magic cannot be described in words I don't think, so a visualisation will have to suffice. And what a gorgeous visualisation! Round of applause for Ben Mantle please. *claps obnoxiously loud and for a prolonged period of time

BUTTON RATING:

No, not every book I read is given five buttons, THERE ARE JUST SO MANY GOOD BOOKS OUT THERE AND I AM FEARFUL FIVE BUTTONS WAS TOO RIGID A RATING SYSTEM AND I'M BAD AT ASSESSING AND CRITIQUING THINGS I LOVE. And breathe.

Bye! x

You can buy Little Red Reading Hood at Waterstones or Amazon, or wherever else you buy your books.

P.S. If there was ever a reason to support your local library, this book is definitely one of them (she says, even though she bought this book from a book shop). Even if that means checking up on your local librarian occasionally, just in case there is any wolf-related crime occurring.
